This year, the Saïd Business School celebrates its 10th anniversary. Yep, that's right, the school is only 10 years old but how it has grown. Here are some intersting facts that you may not have known.

Students in the first year had classes in the Radcliffe Infirmary, students passed patients in the hallway on their way to learn about business.
The site on which the current business school was built used to be the home of the Oxford Rewley Road railway station. This station was taken down gently and transported to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre where model railway enthuasts can enjoy the architecture of this old building
The mound in the garden of the business school is the visible part of an archieogical of the ancient abbey, Rewley Abbey where Cistercian monks once studied back in the 13th century. The business school is not allowed to build there so instead we have a beautifully landscaped garden where we can play croquet in the summer. Lovely.

Last night, a small group of us attended the reunion dinner as a representative of the current class. It was a little weird to be dressed in a posh frock and have a three course dinner at tables in the Common Room which had been the location of the roudy South America night at Happy Hour the night before. But it was great to meet some of the students from the class of 1996 and hear their stories and to speculate with each other from our year what we will be like when we come back for our 10 year anniversary.

Well done SBS, I hope that your next 10 years are a successful as your last ones.

Football training schedule

We will be training on Wednesdays 5-6:30 pm and on Sundays 11:30 – 1pm am at the University Parks.

We have the Cambridge match on May 6th for which we will pull the best 11 from the MFE and MBA

And the MBAT on May 25th-28th for which we will pull the best 11 MBA.

There are no guaranteed spots and the best 11 will start, however, if you want to give yourself a chance you will have to start coming to training now.

MBA Photo Competition

Calling all photographers - time to dust off those cameras and get clicking - announcing the launch of a super friendly MBA photo competition!

Please see below for the terms and conditions. The top three entries will be picked by a student panel. Many thanks to Charmaine Hutton, Jason McAllister, Natalia Vainer and Pierce Louis for agreeing to pick the top three. Stephan Chambers has kindly agreed to pick the winner from the final three. The school has also kindly agreed to provide space in the school such that we can hang a framed print of the winning photo.

The theme for the competition is your MBA experience; if this seems a little vague and you are looking for inspiration then additional ideas could include celebration, friends, discovery or maybe even weather!

We plan to exhibit as many of the entries as possible at SBS during graduation week. Further, if there is interest, a book including as many entries as possible will be published ready for graduation. The winning picture would be on the front cover of the book. Any profits from the sale of the book will go to Oxfam.

Should you wish to get involved with the competition then please let me know – any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Terms and Conditions
1. All entries should be sent/pidged to Paul Rode, SBS, 1 Park End Street, Oxford, OX1 1HP.
2. All entries must be received at SBS by 10am on June 1.
3. Each MBA student may submit up to three pictures.
4. Each entry must be printed on 8in.x 10in. photographic paper. Apologies but due to the large number of expected entries e-mail submissions cannot be accepted.
5. Please mark your entries with your name and the approximate date the
picture was taken. Please indicate on your entry whether you are able to provide a digital copy of your entry (to reduce the publishing costs of the proposed book, only digital images will be accepted for inclusion in the book). Digital photographs must be in a high quality JPEG format, a minimum size of 1600x1200 pixels at 300dpi, and taken on at least a 2 Megapixel camera.
6. Due to the proposed exhibition during graduation week, please note that entries will not be returned.
7. Any captions accompanying your entry must be no more than 20 words long.
8. Please ensure that you get the permission of anyone in the picture to reproduce their image.
9. By submitting your picture, you give the organizers the right to reproduce the image and/or exhibit the pictures electronically and/or in print. Further, you give the organizers the right to maintain a private record of your entry during the period up to and including graduation week, and to share the pictures with the SBS 2006 Year Book team.
10. We cannot guarantee that all entries will be exhibited or published in the proposed book.
11. Entrants will be informed as to whether their picture is to be included in the proposed book. The organizers will then request the digital copy to be submitted.
12. Please note that photography of the entries will be permitted during the exhibition.
13. Feel free to enter your pictures into other competitions, should you so wish.

The Boat Race

Oxford Rocks!!

Congratulations to the boys who rowed in this years annual boat race against Cambridge in London yesterday and won by 5 boat lengths. A fantastic result!

A special congratulations to the MSc students in the boat. Well done for keeping the tradition of having a rower from the business school in the race.

Varsity Ice Hockey 6-1

What can I say, this was by far one of the most exciting ice hockey matches that I have ever been to. It probably helps that one of our very own, Paul St. Pierre Plamadon, was on the ice and doing a most fabulous job. Paul, we promised you a massive sign and here it is...

... we hope you saw us waving proudly at you and cheering you on.

Last Saturday, the MBA class was out in full force to watch our Oxford Blues played the annual the annual Varsity match against Cambridge. Our boys did a sterling job with an excellent defence and a fantastic goalie.

History
Oxford University's hockey tradition traces its roots to a historically unconfirmed 6-0 victory over Cambridge in St Moritz in 1885, but the first photograph and team lists date from February 1895. Formed by Canadians, the tradition has continued to this day (Paul is from Canada) however the heaving statium last Saturday is evidence that the rest of the world is catching up with this exciting sport.

Well done Paul for a great match!

Torpids and blades

Well folks, Torpids for 2006 is now over. Thanks to all those who came to cheer your classmates on and a huge round of applause to Paul Kohler (six-seat for St Hugh’s Men’s First VIII) & Kate Patterson (Stroke for St Hugh’s Women’s First VIII), who both won the coveted “Blades” today.

We had a great turnout, with a big crowd for the Templeton race. It was a real heartbreaking moment as the race was klaxoned (cancelled due to a crash) before our boys got to make their move. A shame, as they were probably up for Blades as well.

Kate got hers just as they turned the corner. Kate is the second head from the bottom (first facing the camera).

And rumour had it that Seth was going shirtless today. He disappointed his female fans by stripping only to a lyrca singlet (in sub-zero temperatures), but the ladies still requested to see it. Some of you may also recognise Mike Smets in front of Seth (PhD student at SBS).

VC "Entrepreneurs choice" prize

Just to let you know, we came 3rd in the competition and won the "Entrepreneur's choice" prize!!

It was a fantastic few days (if a little tiring), and we all got so much out of it. A HUGE thanks to Mike for setting up the competition - we had an amazing, unforgettable experience, and hope we did you all proud!

Cambridge came first, IESE came second, then us. We beat Insead, Rotterdam and HEC.

After handing in our term sheet, appendices and exec summary yesterday morning, we did a 6 min presentation and then faced 9 mins of gruelling questions from the judges (dragon's den style). We had traded our presentation slot so we could go first and watch all the other teams present - this was a great decision because we learnt so much from watching the others and hearing the questions from the Judges. After the awards ceremony, we also had the opportunity to speak to each judge individually and hear their feedback and advice. This part was invaluable. We will aim to get our notes written up and sent round, so that everyone can benefit from some of their insight as well.

Fun Club goes to Stockholm

It's been a long term, full of excitement, stresses and we've still got weeks to go before we can truely relax for a bit. A group of us, about 17 in total, decided to take a trip to Sweden for the weekend before the real studying starts.

Stockholm is a beautiful city, full of interesting little lanes and buildings and at this time of year, snow. The weather was crisp, the food healthy and the break, exactly what we all needed.

Things worth mentioning (some of you will know what they mean):

Salsamania

Hello Everyone,

Were you inspired by the salsa dancing at the Union last night? Anyhow, I thought we'd start gearing up for the MBAT and also have some fun as well. Did you notice the Salsa Dancing competition when you scrolled down the list of sports?? hehe.
Well, I've got a fierce proposal for those who might be interested. Please check out the class schedule of the Oxford Salsa Society.

Beginner Lessons every Monday (7 - 7:45PM)

So, we'll be promoted every month up one level and ready to compete in May.
That will be the intended process flow. See what I learned from Ops Management!
If we input the effort, we can be transformed into an SBS Salsa Dancer. Of course, those who already know how to Salsa can practice with the Intermediate or Advanced levels on Mondays. Chinese New Year, SBS style

On the night of the 27th January, the ethnic Chinese students at SBS (and Mac) put on an incredible Chinese New Year event at the business school. I was in Singapore last year for Chinese New Year and had a great time so I was looking forward to seeing what would be in store for us this year.

We were in for a treat.

The evening started out with a fantastic lion dance put on by a local Kung Fu school. Things just kept getting better, I had no idea that there were so many talented students at the business school! There were several performances on Eastern musical instruments, a Kung Fu demonstration, a mock (?) Chinese wedding and a toe tapping, lighter waving rendition of a Chinese pop song by one of the MFE guys. Fantastic!

But in a way, totally expected. Well done guys, we all had a great time.

Cricket Anyone?

SBS has been placed in the Division 3 of the ‘Oxford Inter-college Cricket Championship’ along with: Merton, Univ, Christchurch, Oriel, Nuffield, LMH, OLIP and Jesus.

The tournament will start from 26th April and will continue till 14th June. The matches will be on every Wednesday, except on 7th June, according to the present schedule. Do contact Rishi if you would be interested in representing the school in the competition. If there is enough interest then I will get the school formally registered for the competition. Please note, the rules allow for a maximum of two members of staff (e.g. Fellow, chef, maintenance etc) to play for the team.

Also, please include your profile, i.e. Batsmen/ Bowler/ Wicket-Keeper/ All-Rounder/ Keeper-bat.

MBA Ski in Davos

On the 18th December 35 MBA’s, MFE’s and their Families and Friends headed towards Davos in Switzerland. One meter of fresh powdery snow, beautiful weather and a great four star hotel was waiting for them. Since the trip was just before the season the slopes belonged to us. No queuing (the British guys loved it), no waiting for beer or the “Schümli-Pflümli” which is the local name for a coffee with schnapps (its also called curveoil).

After the first couple of days everyone had to fight with their aches and pains, but after the first swings on the fantastic slopes the next morning the soreness all of a sudden disappeared. A rich breakfast delighted us every morning with everything which is needed to sustain a day on the trails. In the evening we got from Swiss Raclette to Swiss Fondue everything what we needed to excuse a fine glass of wine. After the diner we were sledding down the mountain in the dark, went for a Swiss beer in one of the numerous pubs or went straight back to the hotel were one could fall deadly into the bed.

We all had a great week in which we could forget the stress that we’ve had the weeks before and where we could get to know each other better. This week showed that the teamwork among all those different nationalities can work very well and gave us the possibility to gain friends for our lives…

Wedding vows
Many thanks to all of you that sent such warm wishes to Clay and me for our wedding on New Year's Eve! Probably everyone says this about their wedding, but we had an absolutely perfect day. After two straight days of rain, December 31st dawned blue and sunny (and cold!). Our families flew in to celebrate the day with us, and some SBSers even made it to the ceremony. We were married in my college chapel (Harris Manchester). The ceremony was great, with a few laughs (including when Clay pronounced my name "Jeksica" when saying the vows) and some tears (mostly me!). After the ceremony, Clay and I walked from the chapel to the Randolph Hotel, which was a cool way to see Oxford in a different light (and with a wedding veil flying all over the place). We had dinner at the hotel with our families and danced until midnight.

Happy Hogmanay!
The McFadden party bus was in full swing this holiday with a trip to Edinburgh for the Hogmanay (that's New Year's to you and me) celebrations. The Scots sure know how to party but I think that the MBAers gave them a run for their money.

Fearn Fun
Le Massif, Quebec – An hour north of Quebec City lies the only mountain on the North American Eastern Seaboard billed as being capable of hosting a World-Cup Downhill. Eight of us spent a week nestled in the snowy woodland of ‘La Belle Provence’ snow-shoeing, cross-country and Alpine skiing in and around this wonderful mountain and cool ice-clumps of the St.Lawrence River. Blessed with warm weather (the coolest being -18 C, but averaging -4 C) we enjoyed some fresh country air and seclusion (not to mention some quality conditions and quality poutine). And would New Year’s be complete without a human pyramid and a bit of Twister?

THIRST

After a gruelling three days at "the place which should not be named" we all needed a drink.

Moustache competition
The guys decided to have a little moustache competition. There were some impressive 'tashes on display, and after only a week! Here are some of the finer examples.

However, as a representative of the female population, I do feel the need to attempt to disuade this kind of behaviour so boys: *big frown*.

The Turf
In true Oxford tradition, our first stop was the Turf Tavern. Some of the guys soon went off for a Pub Crawl.

The rest of us stayed on for a bit before getting some food before the main event of the evening.

THIRST
Many thanks to Serge for doing much of the planning and organisation of the evening. Also thanks go to the Sports and Social committee for paying for the venue and providing three free drinks to every MBA student who turned up.

Red, Yellow um... Blue and Green

No, I'm not talking about stoplights, of course, I'm refering to the end of term event organised by the Sports and Social committe.

The reason
Over the last 8 weeks, we have all been doing classes with a third of the class population in three sections: A, B and C. We've got to know each other pretty well and as the sections will change in Hilary, this is our chance to have one last group moment.

The deal
Each section got a colour, Section A was RED, Section B was YELLOW and Section C was GREEN. The idea was for everyone in each section to wear something representing their section on the last Friday. Then during a FREE Happy Hour, we would have some competitions to determine once and for all, which section was the best.

The revolt
Apparantly one section was not too happy with their choice of colour and staged a coup. The colour was changed from Yellow to Blue. What are they like!

It was a good night out for all. Thanks to everyone (Leslie) who put their pictures of the even on the shared drive. I'll add them to this page once early next week.

Rugby Blues

How can something so right go so wrong? I'm talking about the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Rugby match which has been going for over a hundred years. As a member of the University, it's a must to go to the match at least once and quite a few of us took a day out of our "reading" week to attend.

On the way there, the "study bus" was buzzing and spirits were high...

Twickers itself was impressive... and the game started very well.

In the first half of the match (see/listen to BBC commentary), our boys were doing very well and at one stage were three points ahead of the light blues.

Then the worst happened. I went for some chips in the break and when I got back the second half had started and Cambridge had won a try. What a disaster! Then within minutes, they scored again. Our boys were beat. They made a good effort but Cambridge was well away and managed to win by a shocking 31-16.

Personally, I blame the coach who didn't let our very own Sean Fauth on to the field until nearly the last minute. And even in that minute, I could see that our team was playing much better.

Congrats to Sean for earning his blues.

Christchurch Regatta

They came, they rowed, they succeeded in giving us the most entertaining race of the history of the business school. Three cheers for the Templeton boys!

Fast Facts: The Varsity Match has been played since 1872, and held at Twickenham since 1921 Twickenham seats 75,000 people (great atmosphere!) The varsity match is televised and watched by millions of people all over the world.

In order to make the most of the experience, I thought it would be good to block-book a bunch of tickets so that we can all sit together and support our boys on mass! So, I am volunteering to buy tickets on everyone's behalf this Saturday. If you want to come and haven't already got your ticket, read on...

FRIDAY 25th NOVEMBER: 5.30pm - 6.30pm - Sign up I will base myself at one of the tables in the corner of the common room THIS FRIDAY from 5.30-6.30pm I will collect NAMES and CASH (no money, no ticket!) Student tickets are £7 (bargain)

I am looking into transportation options, e.g hiring a bus to take a bunch of people, depending on demand. If that doesn't work out, the other options can be found at the Twickenham Stadium website.

Fellow SBS classmates,

This is a quick note to let you know that your humble servants, the SBS Football Club, were successful in the first game of the campaign.

The 4-1 victory over Pembroke College last Thursday was incredibly enjoyable for all those who participated. I think I speak for all when I say that we are all just so pleased to be playing the beautiful game here in such fine company and under the SBS banner.

Halloween Happy Hour

Well, considering the timing of our appointment, the first event put on my the newly appointed 2005 Sports and Social Reps was a roaring success.

You guessed it, there was a Halloween theme, and several students (admittedly more American) in the class, really put in an effort and came dressed to scare! Here are some of the highlights...

As we came to the end of a very eventful Week 3 of our course, it was a great time to let down our hair and show our true colour to a few of our new friends.

Matriculation: Sat 15th Oct

This was definitely one event which was talked about and caused anxiety to a lot of fellow SBSlers, especially when it came to wearing those bow-ties. It turned out to be a pretty short event with everyone matriculating.

This was followed by a traditional drink at Turf Tavern for most and then the matriculation pub crawl.

Here is a pic of couple of SBSlers finding an alternate use to the mortar-boards. I am not too sure if the dons would approve of the use they have been put to.
